Everest Base Camp vs Annapurna Circuit: Which Is Harder?

Verdict up front: Annapurna Circuit is the physically longer and higher trek, but Everest Base Camp is the more relentless one — EBC has less rest-day flexibility and fewer alternate routes if the weather turns, which is why many experienced guides consider it the tougher day-to-day trek despite Annapurna's higher pass.

Distance and duration: Annapurna Circuit is typically the longer itinerary at 15-18 days versus EBC's 12-14 days, though EBC packs a comparable amount of elevation gain into fewer days.

Highest point: both routes demand serious acclimatization — Annapurna Circuit crosses Thorong La at 5,416 m, while EBC's Kala Patthar viewpoint sits close behind at 5,545 m.

Infrastructure: Annapurna has more teahouse variety, more exit options if you need to end the trek early, and (outside the restricted Manaslu-adjacent sections) generally easier logistics. EBC's Khumbu valley is more committing once you're several days in.

Which to choose: if you want the single most famous mountain view in the world and don't mind a demanding but well-supported trail, choose EBC. If you want more route variety, a big pass crossing, and slightly more flexibility along the way, choose Annapurna Circuit.
